Best time to visit Munnar and what to see
When to go, where to stay, what to see and how to reach Munnar

Munnar is a hill station in Kerala, about 1,500 metres above sea level, known for endless tea gardens, misty valleys and cool weather. This guide will help you choose the right month, plan your days and reach Munnar easily.
Best time to visit Munnar
- October to February: cool and pleasant, with clear views. This is the busiest season, especially around Christmas and New Year, so book your stay early.
- March to May: warmer afternoons but still comfortable. Fewer crowds and often better prices.
- June to September: monsoon season. The hills are very green and the waterfalls are full, but rain can disturb sightseeing. Good for a slow, relaxed trip.
Places to see
- Tea gardens: walk or drive through the plantations. Early morning is the best time for photos.
- Tea Museum: learn how tea is grown and made, and buy fresh tea to take home.
- Mattupetty Dam: a calm lake with boating, close to the town.
- Echo Point: a viewpoint where your voice comes back from the hills.
- Kundala Lake and Top Station: wide views of the hills and valleys.
- Eravikulam National Park: home of the Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat found only in these hills. The park is usually closed for a few weeks early in the year, so check before you plan.
- Waterfalls: Attukal and Lakkam are popular, and look best after the rains.
How many days do you need
- 2 days: tea gardens, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point.
- 3 days: add Eravikulam, Top Station and a relaxed evening in the town.
- 4 days: add waterfalls and slow mornings at your stay.
How to reach Munnar
- By road: Munnar is well connected by road from Kochi, Madurai, Coimbatore and Bengaluru. The last stretch is a winding hill road, so allow extra time.
- Nearest airport: Cochin International Airport, around 4 to 5 hours by road.
- Nearest railway stations: Aluva and Ernakulam, then continue by car or bus.
What to carry
- A light jacket for mornings and evenings
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A rain jacket or umbrella
- Some cash for small shops, as mobile network can be weak in some places
- Motion sickness tablets if anyone in your group gets sick on winding roads
Tips for a better trip
- Start sightseeing early, as clouds and mist often build up by afternoon.
- Book your stay before travelling, especially for weekends and holidays.
- Keep one slow day in your plan. Munnar is best enjoyed without rushing.
